Formosa Marine in Brisbane is one of Australia's leading manufacturers of production-plate alloy boats. From its Cleveland factory, this progressive company produces more than two dozen different models from 4.55m to 7.0m in length. Formosa Marine boats are different, innovative, durably built, and cleverly designed for fishermen and family boaters. This Formosa 480 Tomahawk Classic SC is a case in point.

The Classic and Offshore models differ in that the Offshore boats have a welded, self draining alloy floor, standard hydraulic steering, and a few additional standard features. The value-driven Classic models make do with a carpeted plywood floor and non-feedback mechanical steering. Otherwise the two lines are much the same. The interior layouts are identical and the boats share Formosa's latest V2 13.5 degree deadrise 4mm foam-filled (to Basic Standard) plate alloy hull.

In the rear cockpit there is a minimum of 640mm of freeboard in the transom corners, rising to 655mm along the sides. This is more than enough depth to keep anglers nicely braced while fishing, and children safely contained within the boat. The bait station/bait tank is a worthwhile option with smaller Formosa models like this 480 Tomahawk, as the bait tank is big enough for a dozen small live baits and the bait board has a cutting surface, storage pockets and other useful extras, not least of which is the aft-facing rod rack.

The DF90A hosts digital sequential electronic fuel injection, meaning it reads the electronic control unit monitors throttle setting, engine RPM, cylinder wall and air-intake temperature and atmospheric pressure all at once. All of these considerations cause the fuel injection to enter the combustion chamber at the most optimal opportunity. The benefits are smoother and faster acceleration, crisp throttle response and quick, reliable starting, no matter what the temperature is.
